10 Nov Evaluating Your Business for Security Threats
Your business represents an enormous investment, often even more than your home does. Often, a business houses hundreds of thousands of dollars–maybe even more–worth of assets, including machinery, electronics, information, consumer goods, and facilities. Even more importantly, your employees spend as many waking hours there as they do at home, and need to know that they are safe and secure.
As close as we are to our own business and its day-to-day operations, it can be difficult to spot the holes in our security. And while every business is different, there are some security principles that are true across the board. Here are some tips to help you identify security risks for your business, and how you can make your business more safe.
Entry Points
The first thing to take close note of are your entry points. This includes any doors and windows, and even large ducts and ports that aren’t usually used for people to get in or out. All entry points (including warehouse garages and large display windows) should be outfitted with locks and alarms. For many businesses, several layers of entry security are warranted, starting with a parking garage and passing through subsequent entry points.
Access Codes
You may have sufficient security on all entry points, but your employees need to get in and out all the same. To do so, they’re probably outfitted with access codes and/or keys. Do you manage these access codes closely? Do you update the security proportionate to employee turnover?
Cybersecurity
Today, many of our business’ most important assets are stored in ones and zeroes. Is your online data sufficiently secure with multilayer passcodes, firewalls, and updated antivirus measures?
Video Surveillance
In our experience, effective video surveillance can be an even more powerful deterrent to security breaches than the strongest lock. Video surveillance not only deters outside burglaries, but can also encourage ethical practices among employees. Even better, video surveillance systems are becoming more and more affordable. That being said, video surveillance won’t be as effective if it’s not properly installed and monitored.
