10 Apr How to Interact with a Security Officer
For many people, interacting with any type of authoritative officer can be quite stressful, even if the officer at hand is merely there for security. However, the relationship between security officers and individuals doesn’t have to be loaded with anxiety. While the vast majority of a healthy security interaction is dependent on professional security guard behavior, people can also improve the dynamic by following some simple tips of interaction. Check out our list of suggestions, below…
Avoid panic
Number one rule of thumb: don’t panic. Whether you are in a situation where you are in need of a security officer’s help, or you are being approached by a security officer who is asking you a question about a situation, it is important to keep a level head and not let emotions get the better of you. This can be difficult for some people who are prone to overreaction. However, the good news is that a properly trained security officer should be able to help diffuse a situation enough to reduce the risk of panic.
Be clear about any concerns
When you are communicating with a security officer, or are being confronted by one, take a deep breathe and communicate as clearly as you can. Most of the time, when a security officer is called upon, they are simply trying their best to discern the nature of any given situation. When you are able to communicate, clearly, you make it easy for them to take care of the business they need to. Ideally, most interactions with security officers should be quick, and this step helps you accomplish that.
Please, try to be respectful
A key ingredient to a positive interaction with security officers is respect. This isn’t to say that you should kiss the ground that an officer walks on, but it simply means understanding that they have a job to do and that is all they are trying to accomplish. Obviously, if an officer does something to lose your respect by acting out of protocol, then there is a serious issue, but on the whole, respectful conversation with a security officer is going to do loads to improve your experience.
