How to Have a Smart Home Safely

How to Have a Smart Home Safely

Almost everyone has some sort of smart technology in their home. Whether you have just a smart home hub like Google Home or the Amazon Echo, or you have a full system and can start a pot of coffee from your phone. There are so many reasons to integrate smart technology into your home, but it’s also incredibly important to make sure that you do safely!

Make sure that your devices are protected

I know we all just want to save a little money, but sometimes buying the cheaper product could mean that you are sacrificing your safety. When you’re shopping for new devices, check and make sure that they have met standards such as ZigBee, Z-Wave, or S2(Security 2). Most brands that are well established follow these safety protocols, but make sure you check these safety settings before making a purchase!

Have a strong password on your wifi

Because most of your smart home products connect through your wifi, you want to make sure that your wifi at home is secure, to protect you against hackers. This is as simple as having a really strong password on your wifi, that is at least 12 characters long. Another great way to keep your wifi secure, is to not name your wifi something like “Mark’s House”. This makes you an easier target than if you used a more ambiguous name.

Never connect to your home devices from public wifi

If you are in public and need to access some part of your home security system, make sure that your wifi is turned off. By using open or public wifi to access these secure databases, it makes it easier for hackers in the area to gain access to these security devices, which is the opposite of what you want.

Keep your phone secure

Our last tip is to make sure that your phone is always kept secure! Since you can access so many important aspects of your home from your phone, if you ever lose your phone, make sure that you can immediately lock your phone remotely, so no one but you can access it.
